In conjunction with the 2020 National Minority Enterprise Development Week, The MinorityEye launches the Minority Business Enterprise Marketplace or, The MBE Marketplace for short.
The MBE Marketplace is a virtual economic asset map that allows users to geolocate minority-owned businesses in South Carolina. The asset map puts the Palmetto State’s minority business community in one central location where users can find minority-owned businesses or minority-led empowerment initiatives and programs.
An economic asset map is a tool that can be used as a form of financial activism for those who want to support or patronize minority-owned businesses but are unsure of where to find minority businesses that provide the products or services they’re looking for in their local communities.
The 37th annual National Minority Enterprise Development Week is hosted by the U.S. Department of Commerce, Minority Business Development Agency (www.mbda.gov) –the only federal agency solely dedicated to fostering the growth and global competitiveness of U.S. minority business enterprises. Since 1983, the week has been designated as an opportunity to honor the outstanding achievements and leadership of minority-owned firms, organizations and advocates from across the Nation.
We believe, however, that this year’s event takes on significance in light of the tumultuous summer of social unrest experienced across the nation. In particular, George Floyd’s killing by a Minneapolis police officer, has led to global support for Black communities and Minority Business Enterprises has grown three-fold.
Thousands of people from across the country are starting to recognize what many minority entrepreneurs and political activists have realized for years –that there can be no social equality without economic equality. This has led to a flood of emails and phone calls from organizations of all sizes and people of all backgrounds asking how they can help support black and minority-owned businesses in South Carolina.
Creating the MBE Marketplace was our response to those questions.
